"It's
For The Kids"
DRESS
FOR SUCCESS
Refereeing in AYSO is all about giving our best to the children playing the games. Our focus is always on providing a SAFE, FAIR and FUN environment in which the players can develop as citizens. To this end, we referees need to use all the tools at our disposal to control the matches we work. One of the best tools we have of imprinting our control over the match is by looking like we are professional, confident, and well trained. In short, our dress demonstrates that we care about what we are doing.
Showing up to do matches in shabby cloths…i.e. with our socks around our ankles, our shirts un-tucked, and our shoes muddy, wearing green shorts…demonstrates to all involved that we either don’t know what we’re doing or don’t care. Shoddy appearance will cause you to start the match without the respect you deserve. Think about how you would expect the referee doing your match to look and how you would react to him/her being dressed inappropriately.
AYSO referees have earned the respect of the participants by volunteering our time and energy to training and serving the AYSO community. When we wear our uniform properly, we immediately project respectability. We build a foundation for doing a solid job on the pitch and we start the match as masters of game. With such a powerful tool at our disposal, it only makes sense for us to use it properly.
